- The 98 companies in this synthetic biology ranking have raised about $23.8B combined, but the median company has raised only $100.5M. The gap shows how strongly a small group of heavily financed platforms pulls the market average upward.
- The ten most funded synthetic biology companies account for about 49% of all capital in the ranking. The top five alone represent almost 33%, making funding concentration an important factor when assessing market maturity.
- Only 50 of the 98 synthetic biology companies have raised at least $100M, yet those companies account for the overwhelming majority of cumulative capital. The lower half of the ranking therefore operates with much smaller financing bases.
- Therapeutics has become a major destination for synthetic biology capital. Companies such as Obsidian Therapeutics, ArsenalBio, Strand Therapeutics, Tune Therapeutics and Asimov show how engineered biology is increasingly moving toward medicines rather than only industrial applications.
- AI-driven protein engineering is attracting large rounds unusually early. EvolutionaryScale, Profluent and Cradle raised about $395M combined through only seven financing events, showing how investors are rapidly funding the intersection of artificial intelligence and synthetic biology.
- Recent financing remains broad rather than concentrated in one niche. Twenty-two companies completed their latest round within the last 12 months, spanning therapeutics, protein design, precision fermentation, biomaterials, laboratory infrastructure and industrial biotechnology.
- Synthetic biology remains exposed to commercialization risk even after large capital raises. Bolt Threads, Motif FoodWorks and Viridos raised more than $1B combined before shutting down, a reminder that scientific progress does not automatically produce scalable economics.
- Public-market companies have absorbed a disproportionate amount of capital. The six companies classified as IPOs in this ranking have raised roughly $5.7B combined, close to one quarter of all funding represented in the database.
- Precision fermentation is no longer limited to one food category. The ranking includes companies producing dairy proteins, egg proteins, fats, casein, functional proteins, textiles, dyes and industrial ingredients using fermentation-based production systems.
- Synthetic biology infrastructure has also become a meaningful investment category. Benchling, Synthego, Inscripta, DNA Script, Opentrons and Strateos raised substantial capital by building tools that help other biotechnology companies design, test and manufacture biological systems.

A few word about our methodology
As you can see, we built a database that ranks startups in the synthetic biology market based on their total cumulative fundraising. To create this ranking, we reviewed many sources and cross-checked information across multiple places.
Whenever possible, we prioritized official company communications, since they are the most reliable source for funding amounts. When those were not available, we relied on reputable industry sources such as TechCrunch, Crunchbase, Financial Times or Forbes (to name a few).
We excluded random blogs, unverified websites, and any sources that could not be validated.
When funding rounds were announced in other currencies such as euros, Swiss francs, Singapore dollars, Australian dollars, or rupees, we converted them into approximate USD equivalents for consistency.
Sometimes different sources report slightly different numbers, or the exact round size is not fully disclosed. In those cases, we flag the uncertainty and assign a confidence label to each startup, visible in the last column.
Here is what they mean.
Full confidence: The company’s equity fundraising history can be reconstructed completely from public sources. The rounds, dates, amounts, and key investors are clearly identified, with no meaningful gaps.
Strong confidence: The fundraising history is largely complete and reliable. There may be a small missing detail, such as incomplete investor information or a minor round with limited data, but the overall record is clear.
Partial confidence: The main fundraising rounds can be identified, but the record is incomplete or somewhat mixed. Some rounds may be missing or certain funding events may be difficult to separate clearly.
Low confidence: Public information is too limited, inconsistent, or ambiguous to reliably reconstruct the company’s equity fundraising history.
When the confidence level is too low, we take a conservative approach and exclude the company from the ranking. We don’t want to include data that cannot be reliably verified.
