SUMMARY

Anduril is clearly ahead in the military drone startup race today, with Quantum Systems and Shield AI forming the closest chasing group.

Anduril’s lead comes from stacking advantages that usually sit in separate companies: large revenue, several aircraft families, Pentagon access, autonomy software, weapons integration and a vast manufacturing plan.

The comparison becomes less one-sided below the overall ranking. Quantum Systems has the strongest disclosed record of sustained combat use, while Shield AI owns the most credible independent aircraft-autonomy platform.

Quantum may be the best-run drone-focused business in the group. Its projected revenue is unusually high relative to the capital it has raised, and most of its commercial activity remains tied directly to unmanned aircraft and supporting systems.

Neros shows why cheap, replaceable drones now deserve their own category. A company producing roughly 1,200 FPV aircraft a week can matter strategically without building the most sophisticated airframe in the market.

Contract headlines need to be read carefully. A $500 million IDIQ or a €1 billion program ceiling creates a route to future orders, but it is not the same as recognized revenue or thousands of accepted systems.

Combat evidence is similarly uneven. Flight hours, sorties and deliveries are useful, but startups rarely publish jamming losses, mission completion rates, maintenance failures or target-hit data.

Helsing has enough capital, orders and factory capacity to challenge the leaders, but the disputed HX-2 record is now the central question around the company. More fundraising will not settle it.

Production scale is splitting into two models. Anduril and Helsing are betting on enormous centralized factories, while Firestorm is testing whether smaller deployable factories can build and modify aircraft close to the battlefield.

The market already has clear specialists: TEKEVER in long-endurance tactical reconnaissance, Skydio in small autonomous reconnaissance, Neros in low-cost FPV systems and Shield AI in portable autonomy.

The ranking could still move quickly. Quantum can narrow Anduril’s lead by delivering its revenue and factory targets, Shield AI can take second if Hivemind spreads across major aircraft programs, and Helsing can enter the top three if HX-2 performs reliably at scale.

Military drones: which startup is ahead?

Which military drone startups should we actually compare?

The military drone startup comparison should currently include Anduril, Shield AI, Helsing, Quantum Systems, Skydio, STARK, Neros, TEKEVER and Firestorm.

These nine companies have moved beyond prototypes. Each has secured substantial external funding and reached at least one harder milestone, such as military deployment, serial production, a significant procurement contract or an active weapons-development program.

They still occupy very different parts of the market. Anduril is building everything from tactical drones to autonomous combat aircraft. Shield AI combines the V-BAT aircraft with Hivemind autonomy software. Quantum Systems and TEKEVER concentrate mainly on tactical reconnaissance. Helsing and STARK make longer-range strike drones. Skydio focuses on small autonomous reconnaissance systems. Neros builds inexpensive FPV attack drones, while Firestorm is developing modular aircraft and deployable factories.

We exclude General Atomics, AeroVironment, Northrop Grumman and other established defense contractors. Baykar also sits outside this comparison. It was founded decades ago, has delivered aircraft across many countries and now operates more like a major defense manufacturer than a startup.

Ukrainian drone companies deserve separate treatment. Many produce vastly more aircraft than the Western startups below, but their financing, ownership, revenue and delivery data remain too inconsistent for a reliable like-for-like comparison.

The funding figures are approximate. Private-market databases sometimes count equity, debt and preferred financing differently, particularly for Shield AI.

Is Anduril already ahead of every other military drone startup?

Anduril is ahead overall today. None of the other military drone startups matches its combination of revenue, aircraft ambition, Pentagon access and industrial capacity.

The strongest recent evidence is the U.S. Air Force’s selection of Anduril for the production phase of its Collaborative Combat Aircraft program. Anduril will deliver an initial batch of FQ-44 semi-autonomous fighter aircraft, with a structure allowing the Air Force to order further production lots.

The aircraft has also launched an AIM-120 air-to-air missile during testing, giving Anduril a weapons-integration milestone that no other startup in this comparison has publicly matched.

Anduril’s broader business generated approximately $2.2 billion in 2025 revenue, according to reporting around its latest financing. The figure covers more than drones, including counter-drone systems, sensors, software and underwater products.

Quantum Systems, Shield AI and Helsing form the chasing group. Quantum has the strongest combination of tactical-drone revenue, battlefield use and manufacturing growth. Shield AI has become the leading independent supplier of aircraft autonomy. Helsing has raised enormous amounts of capital and secured orders for thousands of strike drones.

Anduril generated roughly three times Quantum Systems’ projected annual revenue and around four times Shield AI’s projected revenue. Its FQ-44 program also puts the company inside a much larger and more technically demanding market than small reconnaissance or FPV aircraft.

Earlier Ghost and Altius deployments reportedly struggled under Ukrainian battlefield conditions, and Arsenal-1 has yet to prove its promised production rate. Those are real weaknesses. They are not enough to erase Anduril’s overall lead.

Which military drone startups have the strongest commercial traction and contracts?

Anduril has the largest military technology business and the most strategically important contract, while Quantum Systems has built the strongest commercial operation focused mainly on drones.

Anduril generated around $2.2 billion in company-wide revenue during 2025, more than twice the previous year’s figure. The company also nearly doubled its workforce.

Anduril sells command software, surveillance systems, counter-drone technology, underwater vehicles and other products alongside aircraft, so its revenue cannot be treated as military drone revenue.

Quantum Systems presents a cleaner drone comparison. Financial Times reporting around the company’s latest funding round said it expects more than €700 million in revenue and approximately €200 million in EBITDA during 2026. Most of that business comes from unmanned aircraft, sensors, software and related autonomous systems.

Shield AI has projected more than $540 million in annual revenue. The company also says its orders and revenue doubled during its latest financial year. Helsing reportedly expects revenue in the region of €440 million, although its business also extends into electronic warfare, submarines and space-based systems.

The U.S. Air Force’s FQ-44 production decision gives Anduril the most valuable strategic position in the group. Shield AI also won a production contract within the Collaborative Combat Aircraft initiative, covering Hivemind mission-autonomy software.

Germany placed significant initial orders with Helsing and STARK. German lawmakers approved €269 million per company and capped each program at €1 billion.

Neros has secured a U.S. Army IDIQ agreement worth up to $500 million for its Archer FPV system. Actual revenue will depend on future task orders. Skydio’s contract is smaller and firmer: the U.S. Army ordered more than 2,500 X10D systems for over $52 million.

Which military drone startup performs best in combat?

Quantum Systems currently has the strongest disclosed combat and real-world performance record among the military drone startups we compared.

Quantum says its Vector platform completed more than 20,000 operational flight hours in Ukraine during 2025 alone. The figure comes from the company, but it is tied to an aircraft selected by the U.S. Army and used repeatedly by Ukrainian units. Vector also placed third in Ukraine’s Army of Drones evaluation.

Twenty thousand flight hours would equal more than two aircraft flying continuously for an entire year. It also exceeds the 10,000-hour milestone reported by TEKEVER for its AR3 reconnaissance drone.

TEKEVER’s AR3 has flown thousands of Ukrainian missions, and the company says it made more than 100 product changes based on frontline feedback. The AR3 EVO offers up to 22 hours of fixed-wing endurance, or around 14 hours in vertical-takeoff configuration.

Neros has shipped tens of thousands of Archer FPV drones to Ukraine, according to recent reporting around its U.S. Army contract. The company has not released enough mission data to measure hit rates, jamming losses or operator satisfaction.

Shield AI had completed more than 130 V-BAT sorties in Ukraine by April 2025. V-BAT offers more than 12 hours of endurance with vertical launch and recovery, while Hivemind can operate without continuous communications or GPS.

Helsing says thousands of HX-2 strike drones have reached Ukrainian front lines. Bloomberg reported takeoff problems and missing autonomy functions during trials. Helsing rejected that account and said more than six Ukrainian units wanted further systems. During a later U.S. Army exercise, 15 of 17 HX-2 aircraft reportedly hit their targets directly, with two near misses.

Anduril’s FQ-44 launched an AIM-120 missile and completed a simulated beyond-visual-range engagement. Earlier Ghost and Altius deployments reportedly struggled in Ukraine, so the FQ-44 test does not yet outweigh Quantum’s much larger operational record.

Quantum Systems leads on sustained combat evidence. TEKEVER is second, while Anduril is ahead in advanced weapons testing.

Which military drone startups have mature products and can produce them at scale?

Quantum Systems, Skydio and Neros have the clearest mature military drone products, while Neros currently reports the highest production rate for low-cost aircraft.

Quantum’s Vector combines years of deployment, more than 20,000 recently reported Ukrainian flight hours and selection by the U.S. Army. The company now operates production facilities across several countries.

Quantum Frontline Industries has also started serial output at its German-Ukrainian facility. The operation is designed to build 10,000 drones for Ukraine within a year, and the first production batch was completed in the spring.

Skydio’s X10D belongs to an established U.S. Army program and has secured a firm order for more than 2,500 systems. It can be deployed by small units without the infrastructure required by larger aircraft.

Neros’ Archer has reportedly been delivered in the tens of thousands. The company has established a China-free supply chain and reached approximately 1,200 aircraft per week. Sustaining that rate for a year would produce around 62,000 drones.

Neros wants to reach one million units annually by 2028, requiring a production increase of about sixteen times from today’s reported rate.

Shield AI’s V-BAT has operated in Ukraine, flown from ships and secured customers including Japan, Poland and Greece. Its vertical-takeoff architecture allows a long-endurance fixed-wing drone to work from compact maritime or expeditionary sites.

Anduril has the broadest product range, but maturity varies sharply. Ghost and Altius have been fielded, Barracuda remains a newer loitering-weapon family, and FQ-44 still has to complete further testing before operational deployment.

Anduril’s Arsenal-1 facility covers more than five million square feet and is intended to manufacture tens of thousands of autonomous systems across several product lines. The factory’s planned output remains unproven.

Helsing says its first Resilience Factory can produce more than 1,000 HX-2 strike drones per month, equivalent to more than 12,000 systems per year at full utilization. The disputed Ukrainian performance reports still prevent us from placing HX-2 alongside Vector or X10D for product reliability.

Firestorm’s two-container xCell factory can reportedly manufacture up to 17 drones per week. Its advantage is producing and modifying aircraft near deployed units, not matching the volume of a centralized factory.

Quantum Systems has the strongest combination of maturity and growing production. Neros leads low-cost output. Anduril owns the largest industrial plan, although much of it still has to be proven.

Which military drone startup has the best economics and strongest moat?

Neros offers the clearest low-cost military drone proposition, while Anduril has built the competitive position that rivals will find hardest to copy.

The U.S. Army wants Archer-class drones priced below roughly $2,000 per basic system. A strike configuration with payloads and supporting equipment costs more, but the order of magnitude remains far below that of reusable tactical aircraft.

A commander can deploy several FPV drones against one target, accept routine losses and replace the airframes quickly.

Skydio’s latest Army order provides a useful comparison. Dividing more than $52 million by 2,500 systems gives an average package value of about $20,800. The calculation includes support and other contract components, so it should not be treated as the standalone X10D price.

Quantum Systems has raised approximately $1.7 billion and expects more than €700 million in annual revenue. Its cumulative funding equals roughly 2.4 times its projected yearly revenue, before adjusting for currencies.

Anduril has raised around $6.8 billion against approximately $2.2 billion in recent annual revenue, giving a ratio close to 3.1. Shield AI’s approximate $3 billion of financing equals around 5.5 times its projected $540 million revenue. Helsing’s roughly $3.3 billion of cumulative funding stands at about seven times its reported revenue forecast.

These ratios mix actual and projected revenue, different currencies and broader product portfolios. Even so, Quantum appears to have extracted more near-term commercial output from each dollar of outside capital than Shield AI or Helsing.

TEKEVER has raised under $100 million while accumulating more than 10,000 disclosed combat flight hours, making it the most frugal combat-proven operator in the comparison.

Anduril’s moat comes from the combination of Lattice software, several aircraft programs, major Pentagon relationships and a factory capable of handling very different products. A rival would have to reproduce all four layers rather than copy one airframe.

Shield AI has the strongest specialized moat. Hivemind operates across approximately 30 vehicle classes, and the U.S. Air Force has selected it for Collaborative Combat Aircraft production work. The acquisition of Aechelon adds high-fidelity simulation and visual databases.

Quantum Systems and TEKEVER have accumulated years of feedback from Ukrainian operators. Their advantage includes thousands of improvements covering communications, maintenance, software, sensors and electronic warfare.

Neros is building defensibility through volume manufacturing and a China-free supply chain. Producing more than a thousand systems each week also creates purchasing power and manufacturing knowledge.

Neros leads customer affordability, Quantum Systems leads capital efficiency among the scaled contenders, and Anduril has the broadest moat.

Which military drone startup is gaining ground fastest now?

Anduril has the strongest momentum at scale, while Quantum Systems and Neros are closing ground fastest within their own segments.

Anduril recently converted FQ-44 from a development competition into a production program and completed an air-to-air missile test. The company also raised $5 billion at a $61 billion valuation and introduced Thunder, a hybrid-electric strike aircraft designed to support or fly ahead of military helicopters.

Thunder is scheduled to begin flying in 2027. Alongside FQ-44, Arsenal-1 and revenue growth, it shows that Anduril is expanding into new aircraft categories.

Quantum Systems raised $1.2 billion, reached an $8 billion valuation, won a U.S. Army selection for Vector AI and began delivering drones from its new German-Ukrainian production operation. The company expects revenue to exceed €700 million and has discussed a possible future merger with STARK.

Neros’ new $500 million Army contract vehicle arrived after tens of thousands of reported Ukrainian deliveries and a rise to approximately 1,200 drones per week. The company has quickly become a central supplier in the Pentagon’s low-cost drone strategy.

Shield AI raised $2 billion in new financing, doubled orders and revenue, expanded V-BAT sales to Poland and Greece and won an Air Force production contract for Hivemind autonomy. The company says Hivemind can now pilot 30 classes of vehicles.

Helsing raised another $1.8 billion at an $18 billion valuation and selected West Virginia for an American HX-2 factory. Recent Ukrainian criticism means product execution now carries more weight than another large funding round.

STARK’s €500 million round and German order have moved it into serious contention. It now needs to manufacture Virtus at scale and show reliable operational performance.

Anduril has the strongest overall momentum. Quantum Systems is making the fastest jump toward becoming a European defense prime, while Neros is accelerating fastest in low-cost manufacturing.

Who leads each part of the military drone startup market?

Anduril leads the military drone startup market overall, but specialized leaders have already emerged in nearly every major subcategory.

A navy seeking a ship-launched surveillance aircraft will pay little attention to the company producing the cheapest FPV drone. A ground unit buying thousands of disposable aircraft has no need for an autonomous fighter jet.

Can we trust the numbers released by military drone startups?

We can trust the overall military drone startup ranking more than any precise comparison of battlefield success rates.

Funding rounds, named procurement programs and formal government selections are generally verifiable. Revenue can also be compared when companies or reputable financial publications provide figures, although forecasts remain less dependable than completed financial periods.

A $500 million IDIQ sets the maximum amount a government may spend. Actual orders could finish far below that ceiling. Framework agreements similarly create a purchasing route rather than guaranteed revenue.

Manufacturing capacity has the same limitation. A factory designed for 10,000 drones has not necessarily delivered 10,000 accepted systems.

Combat evidence remains the weakest area. Companies usually publish total flight hours, aircraft delivered or successful demonstrations. They rarely disclose mission completion rates, electronic-warfare losses, maintenance failures or target hit rates.

Quantum Systems’ 20,000-hour figure and TEKEVER’s 10,000-hour figure come from the companies. The operational context and repeated customer adoption make both credible, though neither has been independently audited in public.

Helsing says thousands of HX-2 systems are deployed and that Ukrainian units want more. Bloomberg reported serious trial problems and a pause in additional orders. A later U.S. Army exercise produced 15 direct hits from 17 launches.

Anduril’s FQ-44 production decision and missile launch are documented Air Force milestones. Earlier Ghost and Altius problems came from reporting based on military exercises and Ukrainian operators.

We therefore give the most weight to realized revenue, firm orders, repeat customers, operational hours, current production and externally observed tests.

Which military drone startups are actually ahead?

Anduril is ahead overall today, Quantum Systems and Shield AI are the closest challengers, and the remaining startups lead narrower parts of the military drone market.

We give the most weight to commercial traction, product maturity, customer quality, scalability and recent execution. Funding and valuation carry less weight than delivered systems or recognized revenue.

Anduril occupies a tier of its own. It has approximately $2.2 billion in annual company revenue, several drone and weapons families, the FQ-44 production program, an operational software platform and the largest planned manufacturing site in the group.

Quantum Systems ranks second. Its Vector platform has the strongest disclosed combat-use volume, its expected revenue exceeds €700 million, and its new funding provides enough capital for broader expansion. Quantum also appears to convert funding into revenue more efficiently than Anduril, Shield AI or Helsing.

Shield AI sits very close behind Quantum. V-BAT has matured into a credible international product, and Hivemind could become more valuable than any individual drone platform. Shield AI would move into second place if Hivemind becomes a standard autonomy layer across several major aircraft programs.

Helsing ranks fourth. It has more capital than Quantum, thousands of ordered strike drones and a widening factory network. The disputed HX-2 battlefield record keeps Helsing outside the top three for now.

Neros rises to fifth after its recent Army agreement. Tens of thousands of Ukrainian deliveries, a reported output of 1,200 systems per week and a path toward a $500 million program give it the strongest momentum among lower-cost manufacturers.

Skydio ranks sixth. The company has a mature U.S. procurement record and a firm order for more than 2,500 systems, although its position remains concentrated in small reconnaissance drones.

TEKEVER follows in seventh place. Its 10,000 operational hours and limited outside funding make it one of the most credible operators in the field.

STARK has already raised €640 million and secured a significant German order despite being founded only recently. Its production and combat evidence remain far thinner than those of the companies above it.

Firestorm ranks ninth. Its xCell manufacturing model is original, but the company still needs far more production and deployment evidence.

Quantum can narrow the gap by reaching its revenue forecast and scaling its new factories. Shield AI can take second if Hivemind spreads across several manufacturers. Helsing can enter the top three by resolving doubts around HX-2, while Neros can climb if its Army contract produces sustained purchases.

OUR METHODOLOGY

This analysis compares the military drone startups that have moved beyond prototypes and reached at least one harder milestone, such as operational deployment, serial production, a significant procurement contract or an active weapons-development program. We assess Anduril, Shield AI, Helsing, Quantum Systems, Skydio, STARK, Neros, TEKEVER and Firestorm.

We evaluate each company separately on commercial traction, combat performance, product maturity, manufacturing scale, economics, competitive moat, recent momentum and category leadership. The final ranking is a synthesis of those sections rather than the output of a proprietary score or fixed weighting formula.

Recent and observable evidence carries the most weight. We prioritize realized revenue, firm orders, repeat customers, operational flight hours, current production, government selections and externally observed tests over funding rounds, valuations, factory targets or product roadmaps.

Contract values are interpreted according to their structure. A production order is treated differently from an IDIQ ceiling or framework agreement, and planned factory capacity is not counted as completed output. Company forecasts and self-reported operational figures are included when relevant, but they are identified as forecasts or company disclosures rather than audited results.

Combat evidence is judged more cautiously than procurement or financing data because startups rarely disclose failure rates, jamming losses, maintenance problems or mission-level outcomes. We look for repeated deployments, customer adoption, flight hours, sorties, documented exercises and independent reporting rather than relying on a single successful demonstration.
