SUMMARY

Muse, or InteraXon, is the brain-wearable startup ahead today.

Its lead does not come from having the newest form factor or the most funding. It comes from combining more than a decade of product iteration with over 500,000 reported users, 16.8 million sessions and a research footprint that no consumer rival currently matches.

The market is already splitting into separate races. Flow Neuroscience leads regulated treatment, Neurable leads brain sensing inside conventional headphones, and NextSense has moved furthest with EEG earbuds designed for sleep.

Funding alone gives a misleading picture. Neurable has raised more than Muse, but it still discloses far less commercial scale; Flow has raised much less than several consumer companies, yet it has crossed the hardest clinical and regulatory barriers.

Muse's most valuable asset may be the messy, repeated real-world use behind its headline numbers. More than one billion minutes of home EEG gives the company years of experience with bad sensor contact, hair, movement, inconsistent routines and the other problems that polished laboratory demonstrations avoid.

Flow ranks second because it has evidence of an actual health outcome, not just brain measurement. More than 60,000 reported users and two million stimulation sessions give it a stronger clinical base than any other company here, although its September 2026 US launch will be the real commercial test.

NextSense has the strongest near-term consumer momentum. Smartbuds are shipping, the product has attracted several thousand verified buyers, and the in-ear format removes much of the friction created by forehead bands, even though iPhone-only compatibility and fit remain real constraints.

Neurable has the largest distribution upside. Licensing its technology to established headphone brands could put brain sensing into far more devices than a startup could manufacture alone, but that model also leaves the company dependent on partners that control launch timing, pricing and customer access.

The scientific evidence is strongest when these products measure brain activity and weaker when they promise better sleep, focus or health. Flow, NextSense and Elemind have unusually concrete studies, while several rivals still lean heavily on company-sponsored research or early demonstrations.

Sleep is the most crowded and unsettled part of the category. NextSense, Elemind, Somnee, FRENZ and Muse all use different combinations of EEG, audio or stimulation, but none has yet built the kind of broad, independently verified outcome record that would settle the race.

Comfort may decide more than sensor specifications. Earbuds and ordinary-looking headphones fit habits people already have; visible headbands, electrode pads and developer-style EEG rigs ask users to create a new routine and tolerate more friction.

Muse stays first until a rival turns a narrower technical lead into durable scale. Flow needs a strong US clinical rollout, Neurable needs partner products shipping in volume, and NextSense needs tens of thousands of regular users rather than a promising first wave.

Which brain-wearable startups are we actually comparing?

The serious brain-wearable field currently comes down to nine private companies whose devices directly measure or influence brain activity.

We include products that use EEG, fNIRS or electrical stimulation and are already available, prescribed clinically or close enough to launch that we can judge their progress. That gives us consumer headbands, EEG earbuds, brain-sensing headphones, research systems and medical devices.

We exclude implanted brain-computer interfaces such as Neuralink, Synchron and Precision Neuroscience. Their surgery, regulation and economics place them in a different market. We also exclude Oura, Whoop and Apple Watch because they infer sleep or mental state from signals such as heart rate and movement rather than reading the brain directly.

Kernel, Beacon Biosignals and Cumulus Neuroscience sit nearby, but their main business is clinical research infrastructure. OpenBCI remains important for developers, although its modular kits are less comparable with finished everyday products.

Private funding figures are never perfectly clean. Some databases include grants, debt or convertible notes, while others count only announced equity rounds. We therefore use rounded cumulative totals and focus more heavily on what each company has produced with the money.

Is Muse really the brain-wearable leader today?

Muse is still the overall brain-wearable leader today, although Flow, Neurable and NextSense each lead a narrower part of the market.

Muse has the strongest combination of product history, consumer use, research adoption and accumulated brain data. InteraXon says Muse has been used in more than 16.8 million sessions by over 500,000 people. Its recorded dataset exceeds one billion minutes of brain activity.

That works out to roughly 34 sessions per user, with the average session lasting close to one hour. We cannot see retention by cohort, but the totals show repeated use, not a product customers try once and forget.

The lead disappears when we split the category into smaller races. Flow Neuroscience is much further ahead in regulated treatment. Neurable has the strongest position inside normal-looking work and gaming headphones. NextSense has moved furthest with in-ear EEG that people can wear while sleeping.

Muse leads the category overall. It does not dominate every use case, and it does not need to.

Which brain-wearable startup has the strongest commercial traction?

Muse has the strongest verified commercial traction among consumer brain-wearable startups, while Flow has built the largest clearly disclosed clinical user base.

InteraXon's 500,000-plus users and millions of sessions give Muse the clearest evidence of sustained consumer demand. Many startups disclose fundraising, prototypes or early partnerships. Muse can show that people have repeatedly bought and used several generations of its product.

Flow's current US materials report more than 60,000 users across over 30 countries and more than two million completed stimulation sessions. That averages above 33 sessions per user, which fits a product built around a multi-week treatment schedule rather than occasional wellness use.

NextSense is beginning to show real consumer traction. Its website reports more than 2,847 verified sleepers, and Smartbuds have recently gone on backorder because of demand. Both figures come from the company, so they deserve some caution, but they tell us more than a waitlist or demonstration.

Neurosity previously said it had sold around 2,000 Crown headsets, generated roughly $2 million in cumulative revenue and reached customers in 56 countries. Those figures came from fundraising materials and were not audited publicly.

Neurable said its original MW75 Neuro headphones sold out, but it did not disclose the production run. Elemind, Somnee and FRENZ provide little information about revenue, active users, returns or repeat purchases.

NextSense's latest disclosed customer count still equals less than 1% of Muse's reported user base. Flow is much closer to Muse on people reached, although it serves a narrower medical market.

Which brain-wearable startup is moving fastest right now?

NextSense and Neurable currently have the strongest consumer momentum, while Flow is approaching the biggest clinical launch in the market.

NextSense raised a $16 million Series A, moved Smartbuds into customers' hands and has already collected several thousand verified buyers. The product is currently backordered, supports HSA and FSA payments in the US and is being marketed beyond sleep tracking into meditation and focus.

NextSense has moved from research-heavy ear-EEG development to a product people can order, review and return under a normal consumer guarantee. Its next test is simple: do early buyers keep using it after the novelty wears off?

Neurable's momentum comes from a different direction. The company closed a $35 million Series A, bringing its reported total to around $65 million. It then expanded its strategy from selling one premium headset toward supplying brain-sensing technology to established electronics brands.

The HyperX collaboration is the clearest example. Neurable has demonstrated a gaming headset that tracks focus, fatigue and performance during play. HP's involvement gives the project credibility, although the headset has not entered mass distribution.

Muse has been quieter, but its collaboration with Cumulus Neuroscience puts Muse sleep EEG inside a platform used for central-nervous-system clinical trials. That opens a higher-value research channel without abandoning the consumer business.

Flow is preparing to introduce its prescription depression headset in the US, with the launch currently scheduled for September 2026. Regulatory approval removed the biggest technical barrier, but Flow still has to win prescribers, reimbursement and patient access.

NextSense is expanding fastest from a small consumer base. Neurable has the broadest partnership opportunity. Flow has the most important near-term clinical launch.

Which brain-wearable startup has the most mature and scalable product?

Muse has the most mature consumer brain wearable today and is the only startup in the field that has already supported large-scale consumer use across several product generations.

People have been buying Muse headbands for more than a decade. InteraXon has already dealt with manufacturing, app updates, subscriptions, customer support and the problems that only appear after thousands of people use hardware at home.

Muse has also widened what the product can do. Earlier models focused mainly on meditation and neurofeedback. Muse S added sleep tracking, while Muse S Athena combines EEG with fNIRS, which measures changes linked to blood oxygenation in the brain.

The company can now grow beyond individual headband sales. Its Cumulus Neuroscience agreement allows the same hardware and sleep algorithms to be used in pharmaceutical and central-nervous-system trials, where one institutional customer may be worth far more than one consumer subscription.

EMOTIV is similarly mature for research and professional users. Its EPOC systems offer more EEG channels and more control over raw data than most consumer products. Setup is more involved, and the devices still look like research equipment, but the platform has been used for years.

Flow has the most mature medical brain wearable. It has operated commercially in Europe, supported tens of thousands of people and completed the US regulatory process. Its scaling challenge is less about hardware production and more about prescriptions, insurance coverage, clinician education and patient support.

Neurable has designed the most scalable future business model. Established electronics partners can handle audio manufacturing, distribution, returns and customer service while Neurable supplies sensors, algorithms and software.

That approach could place Neurable inside far more devices than it could build alone. It also leaves the company dependent on partners that can delay launches, negotiate lower royalties or eventually develop competing technology.

NextSense has now crossed from prototype to real product. Smartbuds are shipping, customers are using them and replacement components are available. The current backorder will test whether NextSense can increase production without damaging fit, signal quality or support.

Elemind, Somnee, FRENZ and Neurosity sell working products, but their shorter histories and smaller disclosed customer bases leave more questions about reliability and operational capacity.

Muse leads on maturity and scale already achieved. Neurable has the strongest route to future mass distribution.

Which brain-wearable startup has the strongest scientific evidence?

Flow Neuroscience has the strongest evidence for producing a meaningful health outcome, while Muse and NextSense have stronger evidence for measuring brain activity outside a laboratory.

Flow's main randomized trial enrolled 174 adults with major depressive disorder. After ten weeks, 54.4% of participants receiving active treatment met the study's response threshold, compared with 26.9% in the sham group. Remission was reported in 44.9% of the active group and 21.8% of the control group.

The FDA described the average benefit more cautiously. The difference on the main depression scale was statistically significant, but the agency raised questions about its clinical importance, possible participant unblinding and conflicting evidence from another study.

Flow has stronger evidence than the typical wellness wearable. The full research record is still less certain than its strongest marketing claims suggest.

Muse has the broadest research footprint. InteraXon says more than 200 third-party studies have used Muse devices across sleep, meditation, attention, ageing and neurological research. These studies show that Muse can collect useful EEG outside specialist laboratories, although they do not all prove that wearing Muse improves health.

NextSense has produced one of the strongest validations of an unusual form factor. A peer-reviewed study compared ear EEG with clinical recordings across 1,255 hours from 20 people with focal epilepsy. Specialists using the ear recordings detected 86.4% of seizures, with roughly 0.1 false detections per day.

Elemind has focused evidence around sleep. In a randomized crossover study, 76% of selected participants fell asleep faster during active stimulation. Responders reduced their sleep-onset time by about 48% on average. The study concentrated on people who already took more than 30 minutes to fall asleep.

FRENZ has reported research covering hundreds of participants and sleep sessions, while Somnee has published and presented work around personalized electrical stimulation. Their evidence remains less independently established than Flow's clinical file or NextSense's ear-EEG validation.

Which brain-wearable startup is best at changing the brain, not just tracking it?

Flow Neuroscience is currently far ahead at deliberately changing brain activity because it treats a diagnosed medical condition under a regulated protocol.

Flow applies transcranial direct-current stimulation to areas associated with depression. Users complete planned treatment sessions through a prescription device. The company has passed an FDA review requiring clinical evidence, safety controls and consistent manufacturing.

Elemind has the clearest early case in consumer wellness. Its headband reads the user's EEG and delivers precisely timed sounds through bone conduction. The goal is to interrupt the brain patterns that keep some people awake and help them fall asleep sooner.

The system reacts to live brain activity rather than playing the same calming sounds throughout the night. That is a more specific intervention than ordinary sleep headphones.

NextSense focuses more on deep sleep. Smartbuds identify sleep stages through in-ear EEG and play gentle sounds during slow-wave sleep. The company claims this can increase slow-wave activity by roughly 20% to 30%, although the commercial product still needs stronger independent outcome data.

Somnee uses personalized electrical stimulation before sleep. The scientific idea is credible, but independent reviewers have reported mixed results, skin irritation and difficulties keeping the electrodes positioned correctly.

FRENZ combines EEG and other body signals with audio that changes during the night. Its company-associated research has reported faster sleep onset and accurate sleep staging, but independent replication is still limited.

Muse can also adapt audio to the user's brain state during meditation and sleep. Its strongest advantage remains measurement and neurofeedback rather than a clearly demonstrated medical or sleep outcome.

Which brain wearable is easiest to use in real life?

NextSense currently has the easiest brain-wearable form factor for sleep, while Neurable fits most naturally into daytime work and gaming.

Smartbuds hide EEG sensors inside small wireless earbuds. They lie flatter than normal audio earbuds and are designed for side sleepers. Each ear receives several fit options, so buyers no longer need a recurring fit-kit subscription to find the right size.

The earbuds still demand some compromise. Brain signals depend on stable contact inside the ear, and one person's ears can differ from each other. Smartbuds also require an iPhone 12 or newer, which excludes Android users for now.

The recent backorder suggests that many buyers prefer this compromise to sleeping in a visible headband. A few thousand early customers do not prove mass-market appeal, but they show that in-ear EEG has moved beyond laboratory testing.

Neurable's MW75 Neuro headphones make brain sensing feel normal during the day. The sensors sit inside premium over-ear headphones that also handle music, calls and noise cancellation. Someone who already wears headphones at work does not need to create a new habit.

Over-ear headphones become less practical in bed, during exercise or in hot weather. Their natural setting is a desk, gaming setup or long concentration session.

Muse, Elemind, Somnee and FRENZ all require a band across the forehead. Hair, movement, pillow pressure and visible hardware create more friction.

Flow avoids overnight comfort problems because treatment sessions are short, although users still need to position the headset correctly and replace electrode pads.

EMOTIV and Neurosity remain the least discreet products. Their designs suit researchers and developers who care more about signal access than appearance.

Which brain wearable gives customers the best value?

Muse offers the best all-round value today, while NextSense is the strongest lower-priced option for people mainly interested in sleep.

Muse S Athena costs about $475. A full year of its premium subscription brings first-year spending to roughly $630. The same device covers meditation, sleep tracking, EEG feedback, cognitive exercises and research-grade data access.

NextSense currently lists Smartbuds around $299 after discounts, with the standard price closer to $349. Buyers receive the earbuds, charging case and three sizes of tips and wings. That price sits well below Muse S Athena and most premium sleep headbands.

NextSense Labs adds optional experimental features through a $19 monthly plan or a separate lifetime purchase. The core sleep product does not appear to require that subscription.

Neurable's original MW75 Neuro cost around $699. The lighter version was announced at $499. That can make sense for someone who would otherwise buy high-end noise-cancelling headphones, since the customer receives both an audio product and brain monitoring.

Elemind sells near the $400 level. Its value depends heavily on whether the buyer responds to the sleep-onset intervention. Cutting 20 or 30 minutes of wakefulness each night would justify the price for many people. Receiving little benefit would make it an expensive sound headband.

Neurosity is the clear outlier at around $1,499. Developers can access a multi-channel EEG system and build brain-computer-interface applications, but that price keeps the Crown outside the mainstream wellness market.

Flow belongs in a different comparison. A prescription treatment costing several hundred dollars could offer excellent value when it helps someone avoid months of ineffective treatment. Reimbursement and medical access will matter more than matching the price of a meditation device.

For an ordinary buyer who wants several uses, Muse remains the safest purchase. For a side sleeper focused on brain-based sleep tracking, NextSense offers the better entry price.

Muse has the strongest broad consumer moat because its data, product history, research use and brand have accumulated together over more than a decade.

InteraXon reports more than one billion minutes of brain activity across 16.8 million sessions and over 500,000 users. The data covers meditation, sleep and cognitive exercises collected through devices used in homes rather than controlled laboratories.

That history helps Muse handle poor sensor contact, movement, hair, different head shapes and noisy environments. A new rival can buy EEG components, but it cannot quickly reproduce millions of real sessions, several hardware generations and hundreds of external research projects.

The dataset should not be confused with one billion minutes of medically labelled EEG. Many sessions will lack diagnoses, expert annotations or a clear outcome. The volume still gives Muse far more opportunities to improve signal cleaning and understand how people use the product.

Muse also has an established place in meditation. Consumers, researchers and app developers already understand the brand, reducing the amount of education needed when InteraXon adds new features.

Flow owns the deepest specialist barrier. A rival depression device would need clinical studies, quality systems, regulatory approval, prescribing workflows and long-term safety monitoring. Large consumer-electronics companies cannot simply add a treatment claim to their next headset.

Flow's records are smaller than Muse's but more valuable for one defined problem. More than two million completed stimulation sessions can help the company study adherence, response and treatment routines.

Neurable's patents and compact signal-processing technology could create a strong platform moat. Each successful integration with an outside headphone brand should make the next partnership easier.

The main threat comes from the same companies that could help Neurable scale. Apple, Samsung, Sony, Meta, Google and HP have large hardware teams, strong distribution and growing interest in health sensors. Neurable must remain technically far enough ahead that licensing stays faster than building internally.

NextSense benefits from specialist knowledge around ear electrodes, fit and in-ear signal processing. Large audio brands understand earbuds, but few have experience collecting useful EEG through them while someone sleeps.

Muse remains the hardest broad consumer position to recreate. Flow is the hardest medical product to challenge.

Can we trust what brain-wearable startups claim?

We can trust some brain-wearable claims today, but the evidence weakens when companies move from measuring brain signals to promising better sleep, focus or health.

FDA documents give us the clearest view of Flow. The regulator accepted that the benefits outweighed the risks, while also calling the average improvement modest and discussing weaknesses in the supporting evidence.

NextSense has strong peer-reviewed evidence that ear EEG can capture real neurological activity. That does not automatically prove that commercial Smartbuds improve deep sleep by the exact percentage shown on a sales page.

Elemind's randomized study gives us more confidence in its sleep-onset claim. The result applies most clearly to slow sleepers who resemble the trial participants. Someone who normally falls asleep quickly may see little change.

Muse's usage figures and dataset size come directly from InteraXon. They are plausible given the company's long history and customer base, although no public audit has verified them. The same caution applies to Flow's user count and NextSense's number of verified sleepers.

Neurable's gaming demonstrations are interesting, especially with HyperX involved. Tests showing improved focus, reaction time or accuracy still need larger independent samples before we treat them as established product benefits.

Commercial reporting remains the weakest area. Most brain-wearable startups do not reveal annual revenue, active users, retention, return rates, gross margins or repeat purchases. Even funding totals vary between private-company databases.

Products already shipping, regulatory decisions, peer-reviewed studies and repeated real-world use deserve more weight than prototypes, waitlists or company-sponsored performance claims.

Which brain-wearable startups are actually ahead?

Muse is the clear overall brain-wearable leader today, Flow ranks second through clinical proof, and Neurable and NextSense form the strongest challenger group.

Muse wins because it has already combined a mature product, a large user base, repeated usage, broad research adoption and a valuable brain dataset. No consumer rival currently matches that complete package.

Flow deserves second place. Its market is narrower, but the company has reached more than 60,000 users, completed millions of treatment sessions and cleared the strictest regulatory hurdle in this comparison. Its evidence has limitations, although it remains far stronger than the usual wellness claims in this category.

Neurable ranks third. It has raised the most money, built one of the most natural daytime products and won the strongest consumer-electronics partnerships. Its position would be stronger if HyperX or another major partner were already shipping brain-sensing devices at scale.

NextSense ranks fourth and is closing the gap quickly. Smartbuds are commercially available, several thousand customers have bought them and demand has recently exceeded available supply. Its ear-EEG validation is also stronger than the evidence behind many first-generation consumer wearables.

Elemind leads the smaller sleep specialists because it has a focused product and a randomized study supporting its main use. EMOTIV follows as a mature research platform that matters more to scientists and developers than to ordinary consumers.

Somnee and FRENZ remain credible sleep challengers but need clearer commercial numbers and more independent outcome data. Neurosity has built a real developer product, but its high price and small disclosed customer base keep it behind the leading group.

Muse could lose first place under clear conditions. Flow would need a strong US launch with broad prescribing and reimbursement. Neurable would need large partner shipments and recurring licensing revenue. NextSense would need to turn its early demand into tens of thousands of regular users without sacrificing signal quality or comfort.

Until then, Muse remains the startup that is actually ahead.

OUR METHODOLOGY

This analysis compares nine private brain-wearable companies whose products directly measure or influence brain activity through EEG, fNIRS or electrical stimulation. We include products already reaching customers, used clinically or close enough to launch that their progress can be judged from concrete evidence.

We exclude implanted brain-computer interfaces because surgery, regulation and economics make them a separate market. We also exclude wearables that infer sleep or mental state from heart rate and movement without directly reading brain activity, as well as clinical-research platforms whose main product is infrastructure rather than an everyday wearable.

We compared the companies across commercial traction, current momentum, product maturity, scientific evidence, usability, customer value, scalability and defensibility. The final ranking is not a mechanical score: a regulated treatment, a consumer backorder, a large EEG dataset and an OEM partnership show different kinds of progress and were judged on what each one actually proves.

Products already shipping, repeated usage, regulatory decisions, peer-reviewed studies and major commercial partnerships received the most weight. Prototypes, waitlists and company-sponsored performance claims were treated more cautiously. Funding figures are rounded because private-company databases do not always separate equity, debt, grants and convertible notes in the same way.

We also separated leadership inside a segment from leadership across the full market. Flow can lead regulated depression treatment, Neurable can lead EEG inside conventional headphones, and NextSense can lead in-ear sleep EEG without any one of those positions automatically deciding the overall ranking.

Key sources include Muse's reporting on users, sessions, brain-data volume and research adoption, the Muse S Athena product page, and the Muse and Cumulus Neuroscience partnership announcement. For Flow, we used the FDA approval record, Flow's US clinician materials, and the randomized home-based tDCS trial published in Nature Medicine.

For NextSense, we used the Smartbuds product and availability page, company funding and launch announcements, its clinical-evidence library, and the peer-reviewed in-ear EEG seizure-detection study. We also used Neurable's HyperX partnership announcement, the MW75 Neuro product page, Elemind's product materials, Somnee's research page, FRENZ product materials, EMOTIV's EPOC X specifications, the EMOTIV BCI platform page, and the Neurosity Crown product page.

The ranking reflects the accumulated strength, recency and consistency of that evidence. It gives more weight to durable execution than to one impressive funding round, one study or one product announcement.
