Insights
- The foundation model market is highly concentrated. OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI, and a small number of other frontier AI companies raised most of the capital in this list.
- OpenAI announced the largest foundation model funding deal in the dataset, with $122 billion in Q1 2026. This single deal was larger than every deal recorded in 2024.
- Funding activity accelerated sharply in 2025 and 2026. The foundation model market produced larger rounds while also supporting more specialized models for science, robotics, media, and enterprise data.
- Multimodal AI became a major funding theme. Luma AI, Runway, Hedra, fal, World Labs, and Decart raised capital for video, image, spatial, or world-model technology.
- Scientific foundation models attracted meaningful investment. Lila Sciences, Periodic Labs, EvolutionaryScale, Basecamp Research, Cradle, Latent Labs, Profluent, Bioptimus, and Living Models all focused on scientific discovery or biology.
- AI infrastructure remained closely connected to the foundation model market. Fireworks AI, Together AI, Baseten, DeepInfra, OpenRouter, and fal raised funding to make AI models easier to deploy.
- Robotics foundation models became more important in 2026. Skild AI, Rhoda AI, Mind Robotics, and Limitless Labs raised capital for physical AI and industrial automation.
- The foundation model market is global. Major funding deals involved companies based in the United States, Europe, Canada, China, Japan, and other technology hubs.
- Several companies raised more than once during the period. Anthropic, xAI, fal, Lila Sciences, Fireworks AI, Cohere, Runway, and other companies returned to investors for larger rounds.
