SUMMARY

MagicSchool is the top startup in the AI in education market today, with Speak, Brisk Teaching, SchoolAI, StudyFetch and Flint forming the rest of the leading group.

The market has already moved beyond experimentation. Gallup found that 60% of U.S. public-school teachers used AI for work during the 2024-25 school year, while Chegg found that 80% of surveyed undergraduates across 15 countries had used generative AI for their studies.

Student behavior may be the more important change. When students get stuck, 29% now say they turn to generative AI first, up from 10% in Chegg's 2023 survey and ahead of course materials, professors, peers and free online resources.

Funding is no longer doing the heavy lifting for the category. Global EdTech venture investment was only about $1 billion in the first half of 2026, down 26% year over year, so the strongest AI education companies are building large audiences in a much more selective capital market.

MagicSchool has the broadest K-12 position because it combines roughly eight million educator signups with major district deployments, student usage, administrative tools and nearly $63 million of funding. The big unanswered question is how much of that enormous top-of-funnel adoption turns into deep, paid, recurring usage.

Speak is the commercial outlier. More than $100 million in last reported annualized revenue gives it stronger proof of monetization than the other startups here, even though its focus on language learning makes it narrower than a district-wide education platform.

Brisk may have the cleanest distribution advantage. Instead of asking teachers to adopt another destination, it puts AI directly inside Google Docs, Slides, PDFs, YouTube, browsers and Microsoft tools, and its educator footprint has roughly doubled from one million to more than two million.

SchoolAI is making a different bet: that the valuable part of education AI will eventually be the supervised interaction between students and AI tutors, plus the information those conversations give teachers. Its one-million-classroom footprint and unusually substantial research program make that bet credible.

StudyFetch proves that direct-to-student AI can reach huge scale without district procurement. Its eight-million-plus users are impressive, but consumer learning tools face much easier switching than school platforms, especially as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, NotebookLM and established education products improve.

The durable winners probably will not be the companies with the cleverest prompts around a foundation model. Distribution, curriculum context, safety systems, workflow integration, student data, institutional controls and specialized learning loops are becoming more important as the underlying models become cheaper and easier to access.

The ranking could still move quickly because public revenue and learning-outcome evidence remain surprisingly thin. For now, though, MagicSchool leads broad K-12 AI, Speak leads on proven commercial performance, Brisk has the strongest embedded teacher workflow, SchoolAI has the most interesting institutional tutoring position, StudyFetch leads in direct learner reach, and Flint is the clearest next-tier challenger.

Is AI in education already big enough to produce real startup winners?

AI in education is already a large usage market, and the interesting question now is which startups can turn that behavior into businesses people keep paying for.

We can see the change on both sides of the classroom. A nationally representative Gallup study of 2,232 U.S. public-school teachers found that 60% used AI for their work during the 2024-25 school year, including 32% who used it at least weekly. Regular users estimated saving 5.9 hours a week. Lesson preparation, worksheets and adapting materials for different students were already among the most common uses.

Students have moved even faster. Chegg's Global Student Survey questioned 11,706 undergraduates across 15 countries and found that 80% had used generative AI for their studies. When students were stuck on a concept or assignment, 29% said they went to generative AI first, ahead of free online resources at 24%, friends or peers at 15%, course materials at 14% and professors or teaching assistants at 8%. In Chegg's 2023 survey, only 10% had gone to generative AI first. That shift from 10% to 29% in two years is far more useful than another forecast about the future size of the market: student behavior has already changed.

Money is behaving differently. HolonIQ counted about $1 billion of global EdTech venture investment in the first half of 2026, down 26% from $1.35 billion a year earlier. Deal volume was roughly stable. Investors are still financing education companies, but the giant pandemic-era funding wave is long gone. We therefore give more weight to a startup adding millions of users today than we would have during a period when capital was flooding the whole category.

The market has also split into several businesses that should not be ranked as though they were identical. MagicSchool and Brisk mainly entered through teachers. SchoolAI and Flint want AI involved directly in student learning while keeping teachers in control. StudyFetch goes directly to students. Speak has built a large consumer language-learning business. We include those AI-native private companies, while leaving public companies such as Duolingo and Chegg, nonprofit Khan Academy and general AI platforms such as ChatGPT outside the startup ranking.

Are schools actually choosing education AI startups over ChatGPT?

Schools are currently buying specialized AI platforms because giving every teacher and student an unrestricted chatbot does not solve the problems a school district has.

A district has to decide which students can use AI, what teachers can see, which curriculum the AI should follow, how conversations are moderated, what happens when sensitive content appears and whether student data meets privacy requirements. Those needs have created room for companies whose product includes an AI model but extends well beyond the chatbot itself.

MagicSchool gives us one of the clearest examples. A recent deployment with Hillsborough County Public Schools followed a pilot involving more than 5,000 educators across 233 schools and district departments. The district then expanded the partnership to more than 14,000 teachers, principals, coaches and school leaders serving a system of more than 218,000 students. During the pilot, 94% of participating teachers called the platform useful and 65% said it saved them at least one hour a week.

Brisk is reaching schools through a different route. Its current district product says more than two million educators use Brisk across more than 20,000 districts. The extension works inside Google Docs, Slides, PDFs, YouTube and Microsoft tools, which means a teacher can use AI without rebuilding the way a class already works. Brisk then sells schools the controls, curriculum alignment, analytics and student-facing features required to manage that usage.

SchoolAI has followed the same institutional logic from the student side. OpenAI's case study on the company reported one million classrooms across more than 80 countries and over 500 education partnerships. SchoolAI's newest product updates go further into district-wide controls and a personal AI tutor for each student.

The demand today is fairly specific. Schools want AI, but they also want someone to make AI behave like school software.

Is MagicSchool clearly leading the K-12 AI market right now?

MagicSchool is currently the strongest broad K-12 AI startup, and the gap is large enough that we would rank it first without much hesitation.

In a recent Crunchbase News interview, founder Adeel Khan said roughly eight million educators worldwide had signed up for MagicSchool and that one in five U.S. children attends a school partnered with the company. Salesforce separately describes the platform as helping nearly eight million teachers across 173 countries. Anthropic's current MagicSchool case study gives another measure of depth: more than seven million educators across 13,000 schools and districts, with eight to ten million student messages passing through MagicSchool's safety system each month.

Those numbers need to be read carefully. Eight million signups do not mean eight million paying teachers, or even eight million monthly active teachers. Khan has not disclosed the breakdown between free registrations, active users and paid district seats. We should not turn a signup figure into revenue by imagination.

The institutional footprint is harder to dismiss. MagicSchool works with large districts including Denver, Broward County and Hillsborough County. Its Hillsborough expansion came after a real district-wide pilot rather than a press-release partnership with no visible usage. Khan also said revenue was growing roughly threefold year over year when Crunchbase News interviewed him.

MagicSchool has raised nearly $63 million, including a $45 million Series B led by Valor Equity Partners. That gives it considerably more capital than Brisk, Flint or StudyFetch, although still a fraction of what frontier AI companies raise.

What has changed most is the product itself. Early MagicSchool was easy to describe as dozens of AI tools for lesson plans, rubrics, worksheets and differentiation. The company now also handles student AI, district administration, curriculum context and safety. At that point, the competitive target gets much bigger: MagicSchool wants to become the AI layer that a school district standardizes on.

No other independent K-12 AI startup currently combines comparable teacher reach, district penetration, student usage and financing.

Is Brisk Teaching the startup most likely to catch MagicSchool?

Brisk Teaching is the strongest direct challenger to MagicSchool because its teacher base has roughly doubled while the product sits inside software teachers already use every day.

When Brisk announced its $15 million Series A led by Bessemer Venture Partners in 2025, the company had passed one million educators across more than 100 countries. Its current district site now says more than two million educators and more than 20,000 districts use the platform.

That is a meaningful change in roughly a year. Brisk had already grown its educator base fivefold between its seed round and Series A. It then managed another approximate doubling rather than flattening after the initial AI excitement.

The product explains part of that growth. A teacher reading a student essay in Google Docs can ask Brisk for feedback there. A teacher watching a YouTube video can turn it into teaching material there. A webpage can be adapted to another reading level without first copying everything into a separate AI application. Brisk removes one of the most annoying parts of adopting new school software: having to open yet another school software product.

The company is also moving beyond teacher productivity. Brisk Boost creates student activities from existing content, while Curriculum Intelligence anchors generation to material a district has already approved. That brings Brisk closer to MagicSchool and SchoolAI than its original browser-extension positioning suggested.

We still know much less about Brisk's revenue than its usage. The 20,000-district claim also needs context because having educators use Brisk somewhere in a district is different from having 20,000 district-wide contracts.

Even with those caveats, Brisk's trajectory looks unusually good. If AI becomes something teachers invoke inside Docs, Slides, browsers and existing learning systems rather than a destination they visit separately, Brisk could end up with the cleaner distribution model.

Is SchoolAI ahead in the race to put AI tutors in classrooms?

SchoolAI currently has the strongest position among the large K-12 startups whose main ambition is to put supervised AI directly in front of students.

SchoolAI says it has reached one million classrooms across more than 80 countries and built more than 500 education partnerships. Its basic product idea is easy to understand: a teacher creates an AI-powered learning environment, students interact with it, and the teacher can watch how those students are thinking and where they are getting stuck.

That gives SchoolAI a different center of gravity from the original versions of MagicSchool and Brisk. The valuable output is increasingly the interaction between the student and the tutor, along with the information that interaction gives back to the teacher.

SchoolAI's newest releases make the direction clearer. The company is rolling out student portals, district-wide controls, intervention features and a personal AI tutor for every student. Its Student Insights product summarizes learning activity so teachers can spot students who may need help. Students can also upload their actual work and receive feedback tied to what they produced.

SchoolAI has gone further than most competitors in publishing research on how the product is used. One analysis covered more than 150,000 teacher prompts. Another looked at more than 23,000 teacher-designed learning experiences. A two-year study followed 82 teachers and analyzed 13,882 student-AI conversations.

We should still separate research activity from proof that SchoolAI causes better grades. The strongest SchoolAI study currently meets ESSA Level III, which is promising evidence based on statistical associations. It is stronger than a customer testimonial but weaker than a randomized experiment.

The position still looks strong. If school AI evolves from “help me create tonight's lesson” toward “help me understand what every student in this class knows,” SchoolAI is already built around the second problem.

Can Flint still break into the top tier of AI education startups?

Flint is smaller than the current K-12 leaders, but its product is close enough to where the market is heading that we would take it seriously as the most interesting next-tier challenger.

Y Combinator currently says Flint is trusted by more than 500,000 educators and students. The company raised a $15 million Series A co-led by Basis Set Ventures and Patron after launching in 2023, and its team remains small relative to the number of users it has reached.

Flint focuses on personalized learning inside schools. Students get an AI tutor that adjusts to their level and tries to guide them without immediately giving away the answer. Teachers see student progress, strengths and weak points. Administrators can set grade-level controls, moderation rules and other guardrails.

The product therefore attacks the harder problem that MagicSchool, SchoolAI and Brisk are also moving toward: understanding a student's learning over time rather than generating isolated pieces of content.

Scale is what keeps Flint below them today. Half a million combined educators and students is substantial for a young company, but it is still far below the millions of educators reached by MagicSchool and Brisk or the classroom footprint reported by SchoolAI. Flint's latest job descriptions say it is now used by hundreds of thousands of students across public districts, private schools, international school groups and governments, which suggests adoption is spreading beyond small pilots.

There are other challengers worth watching, particularly Kira Learning, Synthesis and Ello. Kira is trying to connect curriculum, assessment and student mastery into one AI-driven system. Synthesis has stayed narrower around K-5 mathematics. Ello has specialized in conversational reading and early learning for young children. None currently gives us public scale data strong enough to displace the six companies at the top of our ranking.

Flint could. It simply has more catching up to do.

Is StudyFetch winning the direct-to-student AI learning market?

StudyFetch is currently one of the biggest AI-native study platforms in the world, with more than eight million users and a growth model that bypasses schools almost completely.

Students upload PDFs, slides, videos, lecture recordings or notes, and StudyFetch turns the material into notes, quizzes, flashcards, games and tutoring sessions with its Spark.E assistant. The useful difference from opening a blank ChatGPT conversation is that StudyFetch keeps the learning experience anchored to the student's own course material.

The company said more than six million students used StudyFetch during 2025. By spring 2026 it was reporting more than seven million, and its current product pages now show more than eight million worldwide. That progression gives us a better picture than quoting the latest figure alone: the company has continued adding users after reaching multi-million scale.

There is some evidence those students return when the product becomes useful. During the December 2025 finals period, nearly one in six users completed at least three study sessions, while weekly usage jumped more than 50% at the start of finals.

StudyFetch has also collected a large dataset on what students actually ask AI. A recent study examined 4,910,114 messages from 144,544 students over 50 days. Its internal classifier judged 92.9% of those interactions to reflect responsible learning intent. Fewer than 1% of students, however, consistently produced what the company's rubric considered high-quality prompts. That second number may be more interesting than the first: millions of students are willing to learn with AI, but most still use it rather crudely.

StudyFetch raised only $11.5 million in its Series A, led by Owl Ventures with the College Board participating. It reached much of its scale through consumer distribution before raising much institutional capital.

Its weakness is easier switching. A student can move between StudyFetch, ChatGPT, NotebookLM, Quizlet, Knowt and whatever appears next semester with little friction. StudyFetch therefore has to keep making its learning system better, because eight million registrations by themselves do not create the kind of protection that a district-wide deployment can.

Is Speak actually the strongest AI education business?

Speak is currently the strongest proven business among the AI-native education startups we reviewed, even though language learning is a much narrower market than K-12 education as a whole.

Forbes reported that Speak crossed $100 million in annualized revenue after reaching about 15 million downloads. Speak's own current website still reports more than 15 million downloads, while its Korean corporate site lists total funding above 227 billion won. The company was valued at more than $1 billion when Accel led its $78 million Series C.

That revenue number changes the comparison with most education AI startups. MagicSchool can show enormous educator reach, SchoolAI can show classroom deployments and StudyFetch can show millions of students. Speak has shown that people will hand over enough money for an AI learning product to create a nine-figure recurring revenue business.

The company has also started moving beyond consumers. By late 2025, Forbes reported roughly 500 enterprise customers, including KPMG and HD Hyundai. Speak users were paying roughly $80 to $200 depending on the subscription, so this is a very different business from a free teacher tool trying to convert district procurement departments later.

Speak's product specialization helps. The learner has to speak out loud, receive pronunciation and phrasing feedback, practice conversations and repeat mistakes. Speak says its tutor builds personalized lessons from those mistakes. That interaction loop is harder to reproduce with a generic text chatbot than a worksheet generator is.

We still rank Speak below MagicSchool when the question is specifically who leads the broad AI-in-education startup market. Speak concentrates on one giant learning problem. MagicSchool is trying to become infrastructure across an entire school system.

If we ranked purely by proven commercial performance, Speak would be number one.

Which AI education startup has the best proof that students learn more?

SchoolAI currently has the most substantial public learning evidence among the leading post-ChatGPT K-12 startups, although we still do not have a decisive randomized trial showing that one market leader clearly improves learning more than the others.

The most interesting SchoolAI study tracked the same 82 teachers in Utah's Jordan School District and analyzed 13,882 student-AI conversations across two points roughly two years apart. Mean critical-thinking scores rose 28.3%, while higher levels of analytical and evaluative reasoning more than doubled. Instructure independently reviewed the work and validated it at ESSA Level III.

That is useful evidence, but we should be precise about what it proves. The study measured changes in the quality of student-AI conversations and links those changes to teacher engagement with SchoolAI. It was not a randomized controlled experiment where otherwise identical students were assigned to SchoolAI or a control group. SchoolAI itself describes the evidence level as “promising.”

A separate SchoolAI study of 1,070 students across 36 schools found that regular users were 18 percentage points more likely than less frequent users to say they understood their classwork, 87% versus 68%, and 19 points more likely to feel prepared for college or a career, 81% versus 63%. Again, the study was cross-sectional, so frequent usage and better outcomes may partly reflect other differences between the students.

StudyFetch has much larger direct learner scale but weaker outcome evidence. Its frequently cited grade-improvement study involved 1,000 students during the 2024 finals period and relied on self-reported grade changes. The company says 92% of regularly active users reported better grades and 30% lower average study time. Encouraging, yes. Causal proof, no.

The benchmark for stronger evidence already exists elsewhere in AI tutoring research. Stanford researchers testing Tutor CoPilot ran a preregistered randomized trial involving roughly 900 tutors and 1,800 K-12 students. Students working with AI-assisted tutors were four percentage points more likely to master lesson topics, with a nine-point gain among students whose tutors had previously been rated lower. The leading startups will eventually need studies closer to that standard.

Can MagicSchool, Brisk and StudyFetch survive ChatGPT getting better?

The strongest AI education startups can survive better versions of ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude, but companies whose main feature is “we put education prompts around an LLM” are going to have a rough time.

Teacher content generation is already easy to copy. ChatGPT can create quizzes. Gemini can rewrite a text for a younger reader. Claude can review an essay. NotebookLM can explain uploaded course material. Every major model is getting cheaper, faster and better at multimodal learning.

So we looked at what remains when the raw model advantage disappears.

For MagicSchool, the answer is its distribution through school systems, curriculum context, student safety infrastructure and administrator controls. Anthropic says MagicSchool already moderates eight to ten million student messages a month through its safety layer. A district relying on that system cares about more than which model wrote the response.

Brisk owns a useful place in the workflow. Teachers can invoke it where their content already lives, and districts can connect its output to approved curriculum. SchoolAI collects structured information about how students interact with teacher-designed tutoring experiences. StudyFetch grounds its study system in course material and then carries that context across quizzes, flashcards, notes and tutoring. Speak has years of specialized interaction around spoken-language practice.

Those products can still use whichever foundation model happens to work best underneath.

The pressure will keep rising, especially now that the foundation-model companies are going directly into education. OpenAI is working with universities and governments, Google has enormous school distribution through Workspace and Chromebooks, and Anthropic has launched products for education as well.

We expect the category to thin out. Generic AI education assistants are easy to build. The companies near the top of our ranking have already accumulated something more useful than an interface.

Are consumer AI tutors or school platforms building the better business?

Consumer AI learning products currently have the cleaner path to fast revenue, while school platforms have a better chance of becoming difficult to replace once they are deeply deployed.

Speak shows what the consumer route can produce. A learner downloads the app, tries the tutor and can pay immediately. There is no district budget cycle, school-board approval or months-long security review. Speak used that model to reach more than $100 million in annualized revenue.

StudyFetch gets the same distribution advantage with students. It can grow through TikTok, search, creators and word of mouth without waiting for a university to choose it. Its own marketing team has described viral videos bringing tens of thousands of signups in a day.

The cost of that freedom is weaker lock-in. Consumers can cancel. Students graduate. A competitor can offer a better tutor next semester.

MagicSchool, Brisk, SchoolAI and Flint have a slower route. Schools care about procurement, FERPA, COPPA, curriculum alignment, teacher training, integrations and administration. Winning one district takes much more work than winning one student.

But the relationship changes once the product is embedded across thousands of teachers and students. A district that has configured policies, curriculum, accounts, reporting and staff training around one platform has a real reason to stay.

The model we like most combines both motions: teachers or students start using the product because it is genuinely useful, then the institution pays to manage and expand behavior that is already happening. MagicSchool and Brisk currently show the clearest version of that pattern.

What are the top startups in AI in education right now?

MagicSchool is the top broad AI education startup today; Speak has built the strongest business; Brisk, SchoolAI, StudyFetch and Flint make up the rest of the leading group.

We put MagicSchool first because roughly eight million educator signups, major district deployments, millions of student interactions and nearly $63 million of funding give it the broadest position in K-12 AI. The main missing number is paid usage. We know a lot about registrations and partnerships and much less about revenue per district, active retention and the share of those millions of teachers who use MagicSchool regularly.

Speak comes second because $100 million-plus in last reported annualized revenue is commercial proof that nobody else in this group publicly matches. Its limitation is scope: Speak can dominate AI language learning without becoming the default AI layer for schools.

Brisk ranks third. Its educator base has moved from one million around its Series A to more than two million currently, and the browser-based approach gives it a very natural place inside existing teacher workflows. If that usage converts well into district contracts, Brisk could get much closer to MagicSchool.

SchoolAI ranks fourth, although we see a credible case for moving it higher over time. It has already reached one million classrooms, has more than 500 education partnerships and currently has the strongest public research program among the large K-12 AI startups. SchoolAI becomes much more valuable if supervised student tutoring turns out to be the core school AI use case.

StudyFetch ranks fifth. Eight million-plus users make it one of the biggest direct learner platforms to emerge from the generative-AI wave. Its growth from six million users during 2025 to more than eight million today is particularly encouraging. The harder question is how much of that audience becomes durable paid usage when students have so many alternatives.

Flint ranks sixth for now. More than 500,000 educators and students is enough scale to show genuine adoption, and its personalized-learning architecture is pointed toward the right problem. It needs another large step in distribution before we can put it beside MagicSchool, Brisk or SchoolAI.

This ranking may look different once the market starts disclosing more revenue and better learning-outcome studies. Today, however, the top group is already fairly clear. MagicSchool has the strongest broad K-12 position, Speak has gone furthest commercially, Brisk has the fastest-looking embedded teacher distribution, SchoolAI has the most interesting student-facing institutional model, StudyFetch has exceptional learner reach, and Flint is the challenger with the clearest path into that group.

OUR METHODOLOGY

This analysis asks what are the top startups in the AI in education market today. We compare AI-native private companies across current adoption and scale, growth momentum, institutional penetration, commercial traction, product depth, evidence of learning impact, and defensibility as general-purpose AI tools improve.

We do not treat registrations, active users, classrooms, district deployments, downloads and revenue as interchangeable. Each tells us something different. A large signup figure establishes reach; repeated usage says more about engagement; district expansion shows institutional depth; and disclosed revenue provides much stronger evidence of commercial conversion.

We also compare companies according to the businesses they are actually building. MagicSchool, Brisk, SchoolAI and Flint primarily compete for school and district adoption, while StudyFetch distributes directly to students and Speak has built a consumer language-learning business with a growing enterprise operation. The ranking weighs those different models together without pretending that the same metric defines leadership in every one of them.

Recent evidence carries more weight than old valuations or historical funding totals. We looked for changes in user and classroom scale, district expansions, funding rounds, disclosed revenue, product launches, repeated usage and research results. Progression matters too: Brisk moving from one million educators to more than two million, or StudyFetch moving from six million users to more than eight million, tells us more about current momentum than the latest total on its own.

Learning evidence is judged separately from adoption. SchoolAI's ESSA Level III work is useful evidence, but we do not treat correlational studies, surveys or self-reported grade improvements as causal proof. Stanford's randomized Tutor CoPilot study is used as a benchmark for the stronger level of evidence that leading AI tutoring companies will eventually be expected to produce.

We also tested defensibility against improving foundation models. Generic content generation receives little strategic credit on its own because ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and other general-purpose tools can already perform many common education tasks. We give more weight to district distribution, curriculum context, safety and administration, workflow integration, structured student-learning data and specialized interaction loops that remain valuable regardless of which foundation model sits underneath the product.

Key market sources include Gallup's study of U.S. public-school teacher AI adoption and time savings, Chegg's Global Student Survey 2025, and HolonIQ's education-market research and 2026 EdTech funding data.

For company-level evidence, we used MagicSchool's Series B and adoption data, Anthropic's MagicSchool case study, Brisk's current educator and district footprint, Brisk's Curriculum Intelligence material, OpenAI's SchoolAI case study, SchoolAI's two-year student-conversation study, SchoolAI's student-outcomes study, and SchoolAI's broader research and evidence hub.

Additional company sources include StudyFetch's usage, learning-intent and Series A data, Speak's Series C announcement, Forbes on Speak's downloads, annualized revenue and enterprise expansion, Flint's Series A announcement, and Y Combinator's current Flint profile.

To assess competitive pressure from the model providers themselves, we also used OpenAI's Education for Countries initiative, Google's Gemini for Education materials, and Anthropic's Claude for Education offering. For the learning-evidence benchmark, we used Stanford's randomized Tutor CoPilot study.
