What are the latest funding trends in AI accounting?

Whether you're building or investing in the AI accounting market, our report covers everything you need to know: the players, the money, and what's coming next.
Summary
AI accounting funding is growing in 2026, with more startups securing investment, a sharp increase in first financings, and audit AI emerging as the fastest-growing category. But total capital is rising much more slowly than deal activity, and the typical financing is getting smaller.
Between January 1 and September 23, 2026, we recorded 53 financings worth $959.4 million, compared with 47 deals totaling $909 million during the same period in 2025. Deal volume grew 12.8%, while identifiable capital increased just 5.5%.
The market has expanded considerably since 2024. The number of funded companies more than doubled from 24 to 52, while the median financing declined from $9.1 million to $6.85 million. Accounting AI is attracting more startups without a corresponding increase in average check sizes.
The headline funding increase depends heavily on five rounds above $50 million. Excluding those transactions, investment actually fell 5.5% year over year, from $502 million to $474.4 million. Large growth rounds are still doing much of the work.
First financings increased from 16 to 26, representing almost half of this year's deals, yet they received only around 12% of identifiable capital. Follow-on rounds captured approximately $844 million, showing how strongly capital remains concentrated around established companies.
Audit and compliance AI delivered the most striking category-level expansion. Funding rose from $7.1 million across three deals to $195.6 million across twelve. Fieldguide's $75 million Series C and its partnerships with major accounting firms help explain the commercial interest behind the rebound.
Tax accounting AI still leads the market in absolute investment, attracting $326 million despite a decline in deal count. Fonoa and Numeral accounted for $210 million between them, nearly two-thirds of category funding.
The market is becoming more selective at later stages. Series C funding reached $385 million across four deals, while Series B capital dropped from $461.1 million to $226 million. A small group of companies is securing increasingly substantial institutional commitments.
Europe has overtaken North America in accounting AI deal count, with 25 financings against 22. North America nevertheless continues to attract approximately two-thirds of identifiable capital, highlighting the gap between the geography of startup formation and that of larger funding rounds.
AI accounting could surpass its 2025 annual funding total, but that outcome isn't assured. The bigger change is already visible: substantially more young companies are entering the funded market, while the largest capital commitments remain reserved for a relatively small number of platforms.

In our research about AI accounting tools, we turn what is vague and complex into simple, useful visuals. Market maps like this one show you at a glance where every startup stands.
Is AI accounting funding really growing in 2026?
AI accounting funding is growing this year, although the bigger change is that more startups are raising money rather than receiving larger checks.
We counted 53 financings worth $959.4 million between January 1 and September 23, compared with 47 deals totaling $909 million during the same period in 2025. Deal volume increased 12.8%, while identifiable capital rose just 5.5%.
Looking back to 2024 makes the expansion clearer. The market recorded only 24 deals and $535.1 million over the comparable period. Funding activity has since more than doubled, while total capital has grown 79%.
But the typical round has actually become smaller. The median financing declined from $9.1 million in 2024 to $7.17 million in 2025 and $6.85 million this year. The average known round has also fallen in both comparisons.
More accounting AI businesses are managing to raise, but investors aren't increasing their checks across the board. Most of the money still goes to a relatively small number of companies that can secure very large rounds.
| Funding metric | 2026 YTD | 2025 YTD | 2024 YTD |
|---|---|---|---|
| Funding deals | 53 | 47 | 24 |
| Unique companies | 52 | 44 | 24 |
| Total identifiable capital | $959.4M | $909.0M | $535.1M |
| Median round | $6.85M | $7.17M | $9.10M |
| Average known round | $18.81M | $19.76M | $22.30M |
| Largest round | $110M | $160M | $100M |
| Seed rounds | 31 | 25 | 12 |
| Series A rounds | 8 | 8 | 5 |
| First financings | 26 | 16 | 9 |
Are more AI accounting startups actually getting funded?
More AI accounting startups are getting funded than ever in our three-year comparison, and the increase goes beyond companies raising multiple rounds.
We identified 52 distinct companies receiving capital this year, up from 44 in 2025 and 24 in 2024. The number of funded businesses increased 18.2% year over year, faster than the overall deal count.
Only one company completed multiple recorded rounds during the current comparison period, versus three last year. The increase is largely coming from additional businesses entering the funded population.
The development is particularly visible among younger startups. Seed financing activity has continued to grow, and the share of rounds classified as first financings has risen sharply.
There's a catch for founders, though. The average known round is smaller than it was last year, and total capital isn't growing nearly as quickly as the number of companies receiving it. An expanding group of startups is sharing a funding pool that has barely increased.
Still, the rise from 24 funded companies in 2024 to 52 currently is hard to dismiss.

Your time is limited. In our market report about AI accounting tools, we put numbers on each part of the market, so you can see where it makes sense to focus.
Would AI accounting funding still be up without the biggest deals?
AI accounting funding would actually be down slightly this year if we removed rounds above $50 million, despite the positive headline growth.
Our calculations show $474.4 million raised in financings of $50 million or less, compared with $502 million in 2025. That's a 5.5% decline, while total capital including the larger rounds increased 5.5%.
Five companies account for much of the difference. Fonoa raised $110 million, while Basis, Numeral and Rillet each announced $100 million rounds. Fieldguide added another $75 million. Together, those financings represent $485 million, or 50.6% of the year's identifiable investment.
The concentration is substantial, although less extreme at the very top than in earlier years. The largest individual round represents 11.5% of funding, compared with 17.6% in 2025 and 18.7% in 2024.
Interestingly, the result changes when we exclude only rounds strictly above $100 million. Adjusted funding then rises 35.5%, largely because three 2026 transactions were exactly $100 million and remain included, while 2025 had two rounds above that threshold.
More companies are attracting investors. The case for broadly rising investment amounts is much weaker.
| Funding concentration | 2026 YTD | 2025 YTD | 2024 YTD |
|---|---|---|---|
| Total funding | $959.4M | $909.0M | $535.1M |
| Funding excluding >$50M | $474.4M | $502.0M | $180.1M |
| Funding excluding >$100M | $849.4M | $627.0M | $535.1M |
| Median round | $6.85M | $7.17M | $9.10M |
| Top financing share | 11.5% | 17.6% | 18.7% |
| Top three share | 32.3% | 38.7% | 56.1% |
| Top five share | 50.6% | 49.0% | 72.9% |
| Rounds above $50M | 5 | 4 | 4 |
| Rounds above $100M | 1 | 2 | 0 |
Are investors backing new AI accounting startups or sticking with the winners?
AI accounting investors are financing many more new entrants, but established startups are still getting the vast majority of the money.
We classified 26 financings as first rounds this year, compared with sixteen in 2025. Their share of financing activity climbed from 34% to 49.1%, a remarkable increase for a market that was already attracting new companies.
First-financing capital grew approximately 66% to $115.5 million. That's meaningful progress, but it still represents only around 12% of the market's identifiable funding.
Follow-on rounds received approximately $844 million. Their number declined from 31 to 27, yet their median size increased from $15 million to $22 million.
Companies such as Fonoa, Rillet and Fieldguide illustrate why. Investors are prepared to commit tens or hundreds of millions to companies that have developed larger platforms and attracted enterprise customers.
Meanwhile, a growing population of younger companies is receiving comparatively modest financing.
Our first-financing classifications rely on public financing-history checks, so they shouldn't be treated as a perfect record of every previous investment. Nevertheless, the difference in capital allocation is far too large to ignore.

In our document detailing everything you need to know about AI accounting, we always try to gather several sources and make estimates that make sense, so you can work with solid numbers.
Are AI accounting seed rounds getting easier to raise?
AI accounting seed funding is more active than in previous years, with 31 recorded rounds compared with 25 in 2025 and twelve in 2024.
The capital raised at seed stage also increased, reaching $149.8 million this year against $130.7 million last year. That's roughly 15% more money spread across 24% more deals.
Average seed financing therefore slipped from about $5.23 million to $4.83 million.
Seed and Series A together account for 39 of the 53 financings currently recorded, or 73.6%. Early-stage deals already represented about 70% of activity last year, so this isn't a sudden change in the market's entire stage structure.
We also can't conclude that raising a seed round has become easy. The figures count successful financings, without showing how many founders unsuccessfully approached investors.
What has clearly changed is the volume of new companies obtaining capital. The market is financing a much larger early-stage cohort than it did two years ago.
Are AI accounting companies skipping straight to bigger growth rounds?
AI accounting's growth-stage funding has shifted strongly toward Series C, even though Series B activity has weakened considerably.
Series C attracted $385 million across four financings this year, compared with no recorded deals at that stage over the equivalent 2025 period.
Series B followed the opposite path. Its financing count declined from nine to five, and identifiable capital fell from $461.1 million to $226 million.
Rillet shows how quickly an individual winner can progress. The company announced a $25 million Series A in 2025, followed approximately ten weeks later by a $70 million Series B. It then announced a $100 million Series C led by ICONIQ in August 2026, at a reported $1 billion valuation.
Fieldguide's $75 million Series C, led by Goldman Sachs Alternatives, provides another example of a company raising significant growth capital to expand its specialized accounting and audit platform.
These companies show that large institutional financing remains available when investors see a convincing business opportunity. But four Series C rounds are too few to establish that accounting AI startups generally advance through funding stages faster than before.
The current picture is one of selected companies securing much larger checks, while the overall median financing continues to decline.

Our report covering the AI accounting market gets updated several times a month, so you always get the latest view of where things stand.
Is audit AI becoming the hottest part of accounting AI, and why?
Audit and compliance AI is the clearest winner in accounting AI funding this year, with a fourfold increase in financing activity and a huge rebound in capital.
We counted twelve deals worth $195.6 million, compared with only three transactions totaling $7.1 million in 2025. The category gained 16.3 percentage points of deal share and 19.6 points of funding share.
Fieldguide's $75 million Series C in February illustrates the scale of investor interest. Its platform uses AI agents to support audit and advisory work, including engagement execution and evidence-related workflows.
Instead of offering a standalone AI chatbot for auditors, the company is building systems for planning engagements, collecting evidence, coordinating reviews and organizing audit work.
The company's commercial announcements also provide useful context. In June, Cherry Bekaert selected Fieldguide for financial audit delivery, building on an existing deployment in risk and cybersecurity. In July, Grant Thornton Advisors announced a partnership involving Fieldguide technology for risk and controls services.
These are concrete examples of accounting firms adopting AI platforms for professional work rather than simply testing general-purpose assistants.
Accounting firms deal with recurring engagements, large volumes of documentation and strict requirements for review and traceability. Software that fits those procedures can become part of daily professional work, provided it supports appropriate oversight and judgment.
Fieldguide's February financing valued the company at a reported $700 million, according to its funding announcement. That demonstrates the scale of expectations investors are attaching to a platform focused on this kind of work.
The financing rebound isn't entirely unprecedented, however. Audit and compliance AI attracted $146.3 million during the comparable 2024 period. Capital was already flowing into this market before the 2025 decline.
What's more convincing this year is the increase in the number of financings. The category's revival extends beyond a single large transaction, although customer demand and regulatory requirements cannot be established as the drivers of every deal.
Is tax accounting AI still attracting the most funding?
Tax accounting AI still receives more investment than any other accounting AI category, although its deal count has fallen.
The category attracted $326 million across twelve financings this year. That's almost unchanged from $325.8 million across fourteen deals in 2025.
Fonoa's $110 million Series C is a major reason tax technology remains so capital-intensive. Announced in May and led by Headline, the financing came alongside the acquisition of PwC's Indirect Tax Edge platform.
Fonoa is building infrastructure for global indirect tax compliance, including tax determination, reporting and related workflows. The acquisition expands its reach beyond narrower tax automation tools.
Numeral provides another large example. Its $100 million Series C, announced in September and led by Insight Partners, supports an AI-powered sales-tax compliance platform. The company plans to expand across software, manufacturing, distribution and wholesale customers.
Those two financings alone account for $210 million, nearly two-thirds of the category's recorded capital.
Tax obligations vary across jurisdictions, and companies operating in multiple markets need to keep their systems aligned with changing requirements. That creates considerable demand for specialized compliance infrastructure.
But the funding figures also show that tax accounting AI is becoming more concentrated around larger transactions. Despite its leading dollar total, the category financed fewer deals than last year.

In our research about AI accounting tools, we look at what the winners do differently, so you can learn from the best instead of guessing.
Is AI bookkeeping attracting more investors?
AI bookkeeping companies are raising more money this year, but the increase is heavily influenced by one large financing.
The category recorded $211.2 million across ten deals, compared with $172.5 million across eleven transactions in 2025.
Basis accounts for $100 million of the current total. The company announced its Series B in February at a reported $1.15 billion valuation, with Accel and GV among its backers.
Basis develops AI agents for accounting firms. Its systems can work on journal entries, reconciliations, tax workbooks and technical accounting tasks. In August, the company also introduced an end-to-end tax platform covering steps from client intake to preparation and review.
That product expansion is interesting because the boundaries between bookkeeping, accounting workflow automation and tax AI can overlap as companies broaden their offerings.
The category's 22.4% increase in funding therefore shouldn't be interpreted as evidence that a much larger number of bookkeeping startups are attracting investment.
For now, investors are making substantial commitments to selected platforms that could automate several connected accounting tasks.
Which accounting AI categories are investors abandoning?
Financial close automation has experienced the clearest sustained funding decline, while the apparent collapse in accounts payable AI is largely explained by one unusually big deal last year.
Financial close automation attracted only two financings worth $27.1 million this year, down from five deals and $66 million in 2025. The comparable 2024 figure was even higher at $120.2 million across four deals.
That gives us three consecutive annual comparison points showing weaker capital totals, alongside fewer financings than in either previous year.
Accounts payable automation looks worse at first glance. Its recorded capital fell from $165 million to just $4 million. However, the number of deals remained unchanged at two.
Xelix explains almost all of that difference. The company announced a $160 million Series B in July 2025, led by Insight Partners, to expand its AI-powered accounts payable controls and automation platform.
Without that single round, the previous year's funding would have been approximately $5 million, close to the current $4 million.
Accounts receivable automation shows yet another pattern: deal volume rose from five to eight, while funding declined from $83 million to $67.3 million.
The different outcomes reveal how uneven investment activity has become. Some categories have more smaller financings, others depend on a handful of large rounds, and a few are attracting less activity altogether.
| Accounting AI category | 2026 deals | 2025 deals | 2026 funding | 2025 funding |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tax Accounting AI | 12 | 14 | $326.0M | $325.8M |
| AI Bookkeeping | 10 | 11 | $211.2M | $172.5M |
| Audit & Compliance AI | 12 | 3 | $195.6M | $7.1M |
| Accounting Copilots & Workflow | 7 | 6 | $128.2M | $59.6M |
| Accounts Receivable Automation | 8 | 5 | $67.3M | $83.0M |
| Financial Close Automation | 2 | 5 | $27.1M | $66.0M |
| Accounts Payable Automation | 2 | 2 | $4.0M | $165.0M |
| Reconciliation Automation | 0 | 1 | $0M | $30.0M |
| Total | 53 | 47 | $959.4M | $909.0M |

In our market report about AI accounting tools, we don't want to repeat what boring consulting reports say. Instead, we show you the real and latest market signals that matter.
Is accounts receivable AI growing despite getting less funding?
Accounts receivable AI is attracting more deals but smaller checks, making it one of the best examples of what's changing in accounting AI fundraising.
Its financing count increased 60%, from five to eight, while total funding dropped approximately 19%.
Average capital per deal fell from $16.6 million to about $8.4 million.
More companies are receiving investment, but the category isn't attracting the same volume of large commitments.
Receivables automation covers work such as collections, customer payment follow-up and invoice-related processes. These are recurring business tasks where specialized software can be useful without needing to replace an entire accounting system.
We can't establish from the funding totals whether the smaller average comes from younger companies, more conservative investors or simply the absence of a large transaction. The database doesn't provide enough consistent operating milestones to settle that question.
What we do know is that falling capital hasn't stopped financing activity from growing. This looks more like a shift toward smaller investments than a disappearance of investor interest.
Is Europe overtaking the US in accounting AI funding?
Europe is now ahead of North America in the number of accounting AI deals, but North American companies still raise considerably more money.
European startups recorded 25 financings, up from thirteen in the previous comparable period. North America had 22 transactions.
The shift is particularly interesting because Europe has become a major contributor to the expansion in funded-company numbers. Its deal count nearly doubled in one year.
Yet North America still received approximately two-thirds of identifiable capital, more than twice Europe's total.
Fonoa's $110 million round was a major European financing. Even after removing it, Europe recorded approximately $165 million across the remaining deals.
Europe has become a bigger center of fundraising activity, with more individual companies completing transactions. North America remains the stronger destination for large capital commitments.
Whether Europe's lead persists will depend on whether its seed and early-stage companies continue securing rounds and eventually attract larger growth financings.

Learning from others' mistakes is the cheapest lesson there is. In our document detailing everything you need to know about AI accounting, we look at what broke startups before you, so you don't repeat it.
Are AI accounting startups getting to Series A faster?
The accounting AI companies receiving Series A investment are younger this year, with their median age falling from four years to two.
We observed eight Series A financings in both 2025 and 2026, so the shift isn't explained by an increase in the number of deals. Instead, the funded companies themselves were founded more recently.
Series A capital increased moderately from $155.6 million to $169.3 million.
It's tempting to connect this with faster AI development and the ability to launch useful accounting tools using existing foundation models. Basis and Rillet both demonstrate how young companies can develop substantial accounting platforms and attract institutional backing.
But company age at financing doesn't tell us when a product launched, how quickly revenue grew or how much customer adoption was needed before investors committed.
Eight observations per year are also a small sample.
We can say younger accounting AI businesses are showing up in the Series A cohort. Whether that reflects a lasting reduction in the time required to build a successful accounting software company is still uncertain.
Are new investors rushing into AI accounting?
AI accounting is attracting more funded companies, but we haven't found equally strong evidence that the number of investors leading rounds is growing.
The number of unique disclosed lead investors increased by only two, while distinct funded companies increased by eight.
That suggests the wider startup funding activity may be supported partly by investors who were already active in the sector.
Several major rounds also involve well-established venture and growth investors. Accel and GV backed Basis's $100 million Series B. ICONIQ led Rillet's $100 million Series C. Goldman Sachs Alternatives led Fieldguide's $75 million Series C, while Insight Partners led Numeral's $100 million financing.
Those transactions show strong institutional interest in selected companies. They don't establish that a large new population of investors has entered the market.
Lead-investor disclosure is also less complete this year, making precise changes in the investor population harder to establish.
Strategic-investor activity has remained limited. We identified four financings tagged with strategic participation, compared with five last year. The classification includes some attribution uncertainties, particularly around investor participation in Accordance's earlier funding.
The evidence points to more companies raising money without a corresponding surge in identifiable lead investors or corporate investment activity.

If you build or invest in the AI accounting market, you need to know which business models pay off now and which ones are fading. That's why our report covering it has a whole section on it.
Could 2026 become the biggest year ever for AI accounting funding?
AI accounting could still set a new annual funding record, but the current figures don't make that outcome inevitable.
Through September 23, the market had raised $959.4 million, equivalent to 70.5% of the $1.36 billion identified across the whole of 2025.
It had also completed 53 financings, compared with 69 during full-year 2025.
The comparison with 2024 is much more decisive. Funding has already surpassed that year's full-year total of $698.4 million, and the number of deals is well above its 37 transactions.
What remains unclear is whether the final part of 2026 will produce enough additional rounds to exceed last year's total.
A few large financings could change the outcome quickly, particularly given the concentration we identified earlier.
We haven't mechanically annualized the figures because venture funding doesn't arrive evenly throughout the year.
For now, accounting AI has sustained a much higher level of fundraising activity than in 2024, even though its latest headline funding growth is relatively modest.
What is actually changing in AI accounting funding?
AI accounting funding is becoming broader at the early stage and more selective at the growth stage, with audit and compliance AI emerging as the clearest winner.
The most important development is the increase in funded companies. Financing activity is expanding faster than total capital, and the rising number of first financings suggests a larger group of young businesses is entering the market.
At the same time, the largest checks still go to a limited set of established companies. Follow-on funding dominates capital allocation, and the headline increase disappears when rounds above $50 million are excluded.
Audit and compliance AI stands out because its financing count and capital both increased dramatically. Tax AI still attracts the most money, supported by major rounds such as Fonoa and Numeral, while bookkeeping investment has become more concentrated around selected platforms such as Basis.
Other categories tell a less favorable story. Financial close automation has weakened across multiple comparison periods, while accounts payable funding has been unusually sensitive to Xelix's large 2025 transaction.
Europe has also become a bigger contributor to financing activity, although North America continues to attract most of the capital. Meanwhile, we haven't established that the investor base is expanding as quickly as the number of financed startups.
The biggest question ahead is whether the growing group of early-stage accounting AI companies can turn initial investment into larger follow-on rounds. The market is producing more funded startups, but the gap between getting an initial check and attracting major growth capital remains substantial.

In our research about AI accounting tools, we like to show you the big picture. We know your time is precious, so we make every page quick to read and packed with as much learning as possible per minute.
Our methodology
This analysis examines global private-market fundraising in AI accounting, comparing January 1 to September 23, 2026 with identical periods in 2025 and 2024. Full-year figures are used separately to assess whether 2026 is approaching previous annual funding totals.
We built the analysis from our classified deal-level AI accounting dataset, combining financing announcements, company information, investor disclosures and transaction characteristics. Our market definition includes businesses whose core products use AI to automate or support bookkeeping, audit, tax, financial close, receivables, payables and related accounting workflows.
Each financing counts as one deal, while companies are counted separately to distinguish growth in the number of funded startups from repeated funding of the same businesses. We review financing dates, stages, amounts and potential duplicate announcements, including extensions and additional closes, before treating transactions as distinct events.
Capital totals represent identifiable funding amounts supported by transaction records. Transactions without quantifiable amounts remain eligible for deal counts but are excluded from capital calculations. Median and average financing sizes are based on rounds with known amounts, so they are not calculated by simply dividing total funding by every recorded deal.
Our comparisons cover deal counts, unique funded companies, median and average round sizes, stage distribution, first financings versus follow-ons, geographic allocation, category performance and investor participation. We also calculate capital excluding rounds strictly above $50 million and $100 million, allowing us to test how much headline growth depends on unusually large transactions.
First-financing classifications draw on the financing histories established during research. Lead-investor and strategic-investor analyses use disclosed participation rather than assuming that every investor in an announced round can be identified. Category assignments follow each company's primary accounting application, even where products span multiple workflows.
We pay particular attention to concentration and historical comparison. A rise in total capital can reflect a handful of large financings rather than an increase in investment across the wider startup population. We therefore assess headline totals alongside deal breadth, typical round sizes and outlier-adjusted funding before drawing broader conclusions.
Our conclusions also incorporate relevant product and commercial announcements, particularly where they help explain the development of major funded platforms. Customer partnerships and product expansions provide context, but we distinguish these observations from the funding dataset itself.
